about

The riffology of the brotherhood began on a cold and moonless night; echoes in the void, bouncing through the swirling mists, damp manzanita, and moss covered rocks on the hill behind them. This midnight rendezvous on New Year's Eve 2006 would yield the first Owl recording, 'Goblin Battle'. After this affirmation of blood rock, Alex (age 22) and Axell (age 12) started to align their musical wave-lengths with short mathy instrumentals throughout 2007; by November they had enlisted their older brother Clint (age 25) to play on a short demo. Instrumental versions of 'Batlord' and Budgie's 'Crash Course in Brain Surgery' were cut to minidisc. With a fine group firmly hatched, but not yet ready to soar, Axell began to embrace and perfect his guitar-slinging, and 2008 brought dirty psychedelic jams across dingy basements and practise spaces across the San Francisco bay area. Greek tragedies, cosmic monsters, and man-made atrocities laid the foundation for the Owl mythos and gave shape to the meandering, unconventional jams and by the dawn of 2009 frequent practices began to take place. Clint's expert timing matched with Alex's compositional skills and brought structure and character to Axell's wild ideas. From this equilateral triangle, the pyramid grew. They returned to the same hill from whence they came, 3 years after hatching, and holed up for two nights (and a morning) recording their primitive metal onto a Fostex digital multitrack recorder. The first true Owl songs, heard from this 'demo'(in itallics), are characterized by a Zeppelin thump, Punk ferocity, and leads varying from washed out Hawkwind madness to Maiden-esque agility. Tapes were promptly dubbed from a crude master for a March 2010 release, but when the cops came knockin' on the rockin' refurbished greyhound bus that Owl was supposed to play inside of, their debut was pushed to May. That fateful, barbequed afternoon was met with much cheering and clinking of glasses; And with a great thrashing of wings, the beast was off...

Oakland, California's OWL is a 4 piece consisting of 3 brothers & a friend that channels 70's metal to a T. MRR reviewed this in their last issue and in it said their was a rumour that the lead guitarist was 13 years old when this demo was recorded! How bad ass is that?
OWL's music is Heavy Metal, no if's, and's or buts. No frills, no make up, no glitter. OWL is Heavy Metal. OWL is 1970's. OWL is a lid of dirt weed. OWL is a ten-strip of WindowPane. OWL is LEMON 714. OWL is rails, not bumps. OWL is Hippie Heavy Metal Murder Love. OWL is Occult. OWL is cult. OWL is HEAVY FUCKIN METAL!
-No Beast So Fierce 1/9/2012

This band seems to have come to fruition out of the NWOBHM lovin' sect within the Oakland, CA crust metal scene. OWL consists of three brothers and an unrelated girl, in cluding members of ACTS OF SEDITION and STORMCROW. Their guitarist who is truly impressive with those crazy solos - not to be missed live. I heard a rumor that this tape was recorded when he was... thirteen years old? I call bullshit, but if it's true, he's like a witching hour miracle. The recording has a vintage raw sound, and captures the band's late 70's, early 80's British influence. Same recording quality and vibe of the remastered PENTAGRAM demos or what witchcraft was going for by using only vintage gear. I think these guys might like HAWKWIND? Anyway, this is one of those tapes you flip over and over for days and get the riffs stuck in your head. Beautifully executed and well worth the $4 asking price.
